CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
Future Entrepreneurs supports the career development topics in the Choices Into Action Guidance and Career Education Program Policy for Ontario Elementary and Secondary Schools, 1999. As a cross-curricular resource, it provides opportunities for consolidation of learning in Language Arts, Geography, and History curriculum for Grades 7 to 10.

Content
Future Entrepreneurs is presented both as a print resource and as a CD ROM and is structured around five subtasks that use 6 P's – promote, probe, prepare, present, ponder, and plan – as the focus for learning. As a supplementary resource to support career development with links to other subject areas, the content development is thorough. The information is accurate, up-to-date, and presented in adequate depth to support knowledge and understanding. Some students who are unfamiliar with business-related terminology may find the language level challenging. The resource promotes the use of information technology, e.g., Internet, and application software. The references, examples, and case studies are mainly Canadian.

Methodology
The instructional strategies provide students with opportunities to develop problem-solving and thinking skills, and collaborative skills, as well as to practise literacy skills. Students are engaged in investigations and explorations that encourage them to learn more about specific aspects of enterprise and entrepreneurship that are of personal interest. There are opportunities for students to develop and apply enterprising skills as they work through the activities.

Assessment
The tasks provide opportunities for formative and summative assessment. The culminating task involves students in drawing conclusions about their personal interest in this career path, using the information that they have gained throughout the activities.

Format
The print version of the learning resource is easy-to-use, with text that is clearly laid out and colour highlights. Blackline masters accompany the strategies for each subtask. The accompanying CD ROM provides an alternate means of accessing the materials.

Bias
The learning resource recognizes diversity, particularly in the entrepreneurs highlighted. There are suggestions for sensitively addressing students' interests and feelings about entrepreneurship and enterprise.

Review Recommendation
Future Entrepreneurs: Building skills that last a lifetime 2007 is recommended as a supplementary resource to support the integration of career development choices with Language Arts, Geography and History in Grades 7-10.

Additional Notes:

This evaluation was based on the 2002 resource and remains valid for the 2007 version.
