CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
The Global Education Activity Resource (GEAR) supports curriculum topics related to global issues in Social Studies/Geography in Grades 2–8.

Content
Credible resources and expertise have been used to create this resource. The resource reflects a Canadian perspective and promotes team building and global awareness. An extensive list of resources and websites is included to assist teachers with lesson delivery. The instructions for use are presented clearly in an easy-to-follow format and language style. The activities provide opportunities for students to make connections to the world around them and to develop a global perspective. The language of the student material and videos is appropriate for the targeted audience.

Methodology
The resource provides a wide range of activities and issues to engage learners of varied strengths and abilities. The resource provides numerous opportunities for students to apply critical thinking skills (e.g., comparing, imagining, inferring, identifying patterns, summarizing, and reflecting) to selected problems and issues. The activities in this resource support students in deepening their understanding of the world around them and in developing a sense of global community. The resource provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning through class discussions, small and large group work, role playing, and written responses. The Team Builder section of the resource includes a variety of team building activities.

Assessment
Assessment suggestions/resources are not provided.

Format
Each lesson includes organizational information (e.g., preparation, related international dates, outcomes), a description of lesson sequences (instructions, discussion suggestions, and follow-up activities), and blackline masters. The resource provides a variety of entry and exit points. Some lessons in GEAR can be completed by all grades. Others are identified for specific grades. The resource reflects sensitivity by ensuring that lessons containing issues appropriate for older grades are identified as such (e.g., HIV/AIDS). The resource contains a teacher's guide and videos. The videos provide current real-world images and case studies (e.g., well drilling, effects of HIV/AIDS on communities, comparing Canadian communities to communities around the world) which support the material in the teacher's guide.

Bias
The Values and Perspectives section builds awareness of personal values, encourages students to challenge stereotypes, and explores perceptions of global cultures and societies. The resource, although educational, has clear references to World Vision. In these references, World Vision is promoted as the reason a family or village is able to live a better life. The promotion of World Vision is particularly evident in the Safe Water for All and Circle of Friends videos.

Review Recommendation
The Global Education Activity Resource is recommended to support curriculum topics related to global issues in Social Studies/Geography in Grades 2–8.
