Curriculum Correlation
The learning resource supports educators in implementing a variety of expectations in various Business Studies curricula such as General Business, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing. The learning resource achieves the outcomes listed on pages 4 and 5 of the resource.
Content
The instructions for use are presented clearly in an easy-to-follow format and language style. The content is current and depicts situations which are of interest and relevance to the lives of young people and especially those studying business studies. The resource connects learning to the world beyond the classroom; e.g., concepts and terminology. The content of this resource exceeds the typical insurance-related information text of traditional resource textbooks and provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge of the insurance industry from the level of simple vocabulary to more complex concepts such as risk probability. The activities provide opportunities to teach character education and encourage young people to become more involved in their communities.
Methodology
The resource presents a series of seven lessons which can be taught sequentially or individually in various Business Studies courses. Lesson plans presented in this resource involve a variety of teaching methodologies, including teacher-directed Socratic lessons, brainstorming, think-pair-shares, worksheets, investigative and case studies, and homework assignments. There are well-developed opportunities for students to learn and apply research skills and higher-order thinking skills and to communicate their findings. The learning experiences provide opportunities to develop life skills; e.g., contributing to a team effort, consensus building, respect for individual opinions or ideas, negotiation, dealing with change, and compromise.
Assessment
Although there is ample opportunity for teachers to present a variety of learning tasks within the seven-lesson unit, the document does not present any specific assessment tools or evaluation criteria for each component of the lesson. There are opportunities for students to assess their own learning and to set specific goals. Informal assessment of student learning is possible through individual participation in small groups and class discussions.
Format
The format of the document is user friendly for teachers and includes photocopy-ready worksheets. The resource presents each lesson in a consistent manner that incorporates the purpose of each lesson and a connection to the content and skills of Ministry expectations for Business Studies. Charts and diagrams are visually appealing and support the content presented. A glossary of technical terms is included for teacher reference.
Bias
This print resource presents all persons in a positive and inclusive manner, with representation from a variety of ages, abilities, and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. References are made to both genders in both traditional and non-traditional rural and urban work and community environments. Stories make reference to young people making valuable contributions to both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
